Background

Dr. Alicia Jones brings a rich background in literacy, science, and education, paired with a passion for creativity and community impact. She began her academic journey at Southern University, earning a bachelor's degree in Biology, and later became a clinical lab scientist after completing another degree at Our Lady of the Lake College. After working in the clinical laboratory field, Dr. Jones transitioned to education, teaching environmental science, biology, and ACT Prep at various high schools. Her dedication to her students earned her the prestigious Teacher of the Year award in 2021, along with recognition as a Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Coordinator.

 

While teaching high school biology, Dr. Jones completed her doctorate, focusing her research on the experiences and perceptions of Black male students with the ACT exam. She later transitioned to higher education, gaining valuable experience in student affairs through her work in career services and as an anatomy lab supervisor at a medical school. Currently, Dr. Jones serves as the Program Director of the Medical Lab Technician program at Louisiana Delta Community College, inspiring the next generation of healthcare professionals.

 

In addition to her professional pursuits, Dr. Jones has made significant contributions as a creative director, working on impactful projects such as Shades of H.E.R., a documentary on colorism; The Side Effect: A Kirt Thibodeaux Story; and several music videos for artists including Ronaldo Hardy, Big Al Cherry, Main Main, and Michael Dixon.

 

Dr. Jones has been recognized for her leadership and commitment to equity with awards such as the NELA Young Professionals Top 20 Under 40 Award, the Dr. Pamela Saulsberry DEI Trailblazer Award, and the Sarah McCoy Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Fellowship at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. Through her multifaceted career and creative endeavors, Dr. Jones continues to uplift and empower her community.

As the Program Director of the Medical Lab Technician Program at Louisiana Delta Community College, they manage program operations, ensure NAACLS accreditation compliance, and drive curriculum development. They work closely with leadership, faculty, and clinical partners to align resources, establish practicum relationships, and enhance student learning. Additionally, they support faculty through mentorship and evaluations, while fostering student success with work-study programs and hands-on lab opportunities.

As the Founder and Board President of The Jones Center for Arts and Academic Excellence, she establishes and upholds the organization’s mission, vision, and strategic goals to promote arts and academic excellence in the community. She serves as the primary ambassador, building relationships with community members, schools, and local organizations. They also plan and oversee major events, workshops, and exhibitions that highlight participants' achievements and engage the community.

In her role as Director of Curriculum for the Monroe Literacy and Art Bus, she developed and implemented innovative literacy and art-based curricula for diverse age groups and community needs. She planned and organized educational activities, such as storytelling sessions, art workshops, and literacy workshops, to engage participants. Additionally, she fostered relationships with local schools, libraries, and nonprofits to promote participation and expand the bus's reach.

As Anatomy Lab Supervisor at Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine, she oversaw lab maintenance, ensuring cleanliness, organization, and compliance with safety policies, including maintaining Material Safety Data Sheets, reporting injuries, and managing safety documentation. She coordinated cadaver delivery, maintenance, and disposal, as well as manage inventory and reorder lab supplies to keep the lab fully equipped. Additionally, she organized and supervised high school anatomy visits, summer anatomy camps, and laboratory practical exams, ensuring a safe and engaging learning environment.

In her role as Science Educator and PBIS Coordinator at Carroll High School, she designed and taught engaging lessons in Biology I, Environmental Science, and ACT Prep, differentiating instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners and fostering an inclusive classroom environment. She assessed student progress and implemented strategies that exceeded progression goals, including raising ACT scores by over 2 points through effective preparation and cooperative learning. Additionally, she led the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) committee, successfully implementing programming for the 2020-2021 school year to promote a positive school culture.

As a Science Educator at Caldwell Parish High School, she developed and delivered targeted ACT Prep lessons, helping students exceed a 30% progression goal and improve their ACT scores by over 2 points. She assessed student performance and adapted teaching methods to align with school and state standards, driving measurable academic improvement. Additionally, she fostered a supportive and collaborative classroom culture, encouraging active participation, critical thinking, and cooperative learning to enhance student engagement.
